Coach Gary Garcia: California Hall of Fame Wrestling Coach

A Legacy of Excellence at MatTime

Gary Garcia is not just a coach at MatTime; he's an institution in the world of wrestling, bringing over four decades of experience and dedication to the sport. His journey in wrestling began in junior high and flourished through his high school years at James Logan High School, where he became a four-time North Coast Section medalist. He continued to excel in college, first as a two-time Community College All-American at Chabot Junior College under Coach Zack Papacristos, then as a two-time Far Western Conference Champion at Chico State, where he earned his BS degree as an elementary Physical Education specialist in 1974.

Coaching Career Highlights

Gary's coaching career kicked off in 1976 at Cabrillo Junior College in Aptos, California, where his guidance helped mold two Community College All-Americans. In 1978, he transitioned to high school coaching at Aptos High School and shortly thereafter moved to Watsonville High School in 1979, where he would leave a lasting impact until 2014. Under his leadership, Watsonville wrestling teams clinched 14 league titles and made significant placements in sectionals, including a sectional championship and a fifth-place finish at the State Championships. His coaching prowess helped produce two State champions, three State finalists, seven State placers, 20 section champions, and numerous All-Americans.

Continued Influence and Philosophy

Even after retiring in 2013, Gary has not stepped away from wrestling. He remains a pivotal figure in the community, mentoring high school coaches, parents, and wrestlers at MatTime, where his son, Adrian Garcia, is the head wrestling coach. Gary's frequent visits to MatTime bring invaluable insights and techniques out of retirement, enriching the training environment and inspiring young wrestlers.

Gary's philosophy that "wrestling is the best sport for developing overall character" has guided his approach to coaching and mentoring. He has been a driving force in fundraising, managing, and coaching his community youth wrestling club for over 25 years, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to the sport and its positive impact on young lives.
