If you wear a badge or a uniform, you already know your job is different. You don't get to pick when things go sideways. You don't get to call a timeout when someone bigger, stronger, or more desperate decides today is the day. And when the moment comes, the only thing that matters is whether you've put in the work.
That's why MatTime offers 50% off training to all sworn Law Enforcement officers and Active Duty Military personnel. We want you on the mat. We want your partner on the mat. And we want the next officer who responds to your call for backup on the mat too.
Why this matters
Most people don't realize how much of the average officer's job involves physical conflict. According to the FBI's Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted (LEOKA) program, roughly 60,000+ officers are assaulted in the line of duty every year in the United States, and around 1 in 3 of those assaults result in injury. Most of those incidents start with hands — pushing, grabbing, taking the officer to the ground.
Studies on use-of-force events consistently find that the majority of physical encounters end up on the ground. If you've never trained how to control someone there — how to get back up, how to keep your weapon retained, how to breathe when somebody is on top of you — the first time you experience it shouldn't be on a sidewalk at 2 a.m.
Wrestling and Jiu Jitsu are the closest thing we have to a real-world rehearsal for that situation. They teach you how to stay calm when you're tired and scared. They teach you how to control another human being without striking them. They teach you the difference between someone resisting because they're panicking and someone resisting because they want to hurt you. That kind of awareness saves lives — both yours and theirs.
Protecting yourself, your partners, and the public
When an officer is confident in their hands, they don't have to escalate as quickly. That's better for everyone. The officer goes home. The partner doesn't have to step in. The suspect ends up in cuffs instead of in an ambulance. Departments around the country are starting to recognize this — agencies that prioritize regular grappling training consistently report fewer use-of-force incidents, fewer officer injuries, and fewer suspect injuries.
For Active Duty service members, the case is just as strong. Whether you're stationed at Beale AFB or anywhere else in the region, combat sports keep you in fighting shape, sharpen your decision-making under stress, and build the kind of mental toughness that the job demands. PT tests measure your numbers; the mat measures your character.
Built for first responders in our community
MatTime is in Penryn, just off Highway 80. We're a quick drive from Roseville PD, Lincoln PD, Auburn PD, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, the Placer County Sheriff's Office, and California Highway Patrol stations across the region. We've trained officers and deputies from all of these agencies — guys and gals who show up after a long shift, sweat hard for an hour, and leave better prepared for the next one.
For our Beale AFB Airmen and other Active Duty service members, we've made the schedule and the program work around deployments, shift work, and the unpredictable life that comes with the uniform. Train when you can. Don't train when you can't. We'll be here.
