Dean Lister was born on February 13, 1976, in San Diego, California. He spent much of his childhood in Panama and Venezuela due to his family's military background, often finding himself as the new kid in school and facing frequent bullying.
At the age of 10, Dean first learned about Jiu-Jitsu through a magazine article, though he didn't begin formal training until years later. Upon returning to the United States for high school, he joined the wrestling team. His coach, Jerry Matsumoto, had experience in both wrestling and sambo, and introduced Dean to submission techniques, particularly leg locks. Dean excelled in sambo, winning two national titles in the U.S.
After high school, Dean discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and joined Fabio Santos' gym, drawn by the sport's success in mixed martial arts. During this period, Dean faced significant challenges, balancing full-time work, college tuition, rent, and BJJ training. He often lived on a modest diet of bread, milk, cereal, and ramen.
Dean trained in BJJ for eight years under Fabio Santos, competing and winning tournaments. However, before receiving his black belt, he and Santos had a falling out. The disagreement stemmed from Dean's desire to pursue an MMA career, which Santos opposed. Consequently, Dean left Santos' gym. One of his training partners, Jeffrey Higgs, who held a black belt under Santos, decided to award Dean his black belt, leading to Higgs' expulsion from the academy by Santos. Dean validated his black belt status by winning the open weight division at the ADCC that year.
Dean first competed in the ADCC in 2000, winning his initial match but losing his second to Ricardo Almeida. He returned to the American trials in 2002, winning the trials but again losing in the finals, this time to Xande Ribeiro. By chance, he was invited to compete in the open weight category due to an injury of another competitor and went on to win the tournament, submitting three of his four opponents.
Dean's success at the ADCC propelled his MMA career, leading to fights in major organizations such as Pride FC and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He also became a prominent coach, training professional fighters like Tito Ortiz, and served as a grappling coach for Team Ortiz on The Ultimate Fighter season 7 (TUF7).
