Jiu Jitsu for Beginners: What to Expect in Your First Class
Taking the First Step
Walking into a martial arts gym for the first time can feel intimidating. You might not know anyone. You're not sure what to wear, what to expect, or whether you'll be able to keep up. That's completely normal — and it's exactly how almost everyone feels before their first class.
At MatTime, we've welcomed hundreds of beginners through our doors. The truth is, the hardest part is showing up. Once you're on the mat, you'll find a supportive environment where everyone — from white belts to experienced grapplers — is focused on getting better together.
What to Expect in Your First Class
Here's what a typical No-Gi Jiu Jitsu class at MatTime looks like:
- Warm-Up (10-15 min) — Light movement drills, stretching, and sport-specific exercises to prepare your body. This isn't a bootcamp — it's designed to get you ready for technique work
- Technique Instruction (20-30 min) — The coach demonstrates techniques step-by-step, then you practice with a partner. Moves are broken down so beginners can follow along
- Drilling (10-15 min) — Repetition-based practice where you build muscle memory. This is where techniques start becoming second nature
- Live Rolling (15-20 min) — Controlled sparring where you apply what you've learned. As a beginner, you'll be paired with experienced partners who will guide you through the process safely
What to Bring
Since we train No-Gi (without a traditional kimono), you don't need any specialized equipment to get started:
- Athletic clothing — Compression shorts, rash guard or fitted t-shirt, and athletic shorts without pockets or zippers
- Water bottle — You'll need it. Jiu Jitsu is physically demanding
- Towel — A small towel for between rounds
- Open mind — You're going to feel lost at first, and that's okay. Everyone does
Common Concerns
"I'm not in shape enough to start." — This is the most common excuse we hear, and it's the wrong way to think about it. You don't get in shape to start Jiu Jitsu — you start Jiu Jitsu to get in shape. Your conditioning will improve rapidly once you begin training consistently.
"I'm too old." — We have students ranging from their 20s to their 50s and beyond. Jiu Jitsu is built on leverage and technique, not raw athleticism. It's one of the few martial arts you can practice for decades.
"I'm worried about getting hurt." — Safety is a priority at MatTime. Training is controlled, and our experienced students know how to work with beginners safely. We emphasize technique over force and create an environment where tapping out (submitting) is respected and encouraged.
"I don't know anything about martial arts." — Perfect. We'll teach you everything from the ground up. No prior experience is needed.
The MatTime Difference
What sets MatTime apart is our wrestling-infused approach to Jiu Jitsu. While many schools focus exclusively on ground technique, we believe grappling should start where real encounters begin — on your feet. You'll learn takedowns, clinch work, and standing control alongside submissions and positional strategy.
The result is a more complete grappling education that works in competition, in self-defense situations, and in building real-world confidence.
Our Adult No-Gi Jiu Jitsu classes meet Monday and Wednesday evenings at 6:30 PM. We also offer Kids and Teens classes for ages 5-15+.
